CANITOAN, Cagayan de Oro City – The Oro Habitat Persons With Disabilities Homeowners Association (OHPWDHA) is spearheading “Basketball On Wheels” on May 1, 2010 at the Calaanan Relocation Site Covered Court, as a pre-fiesta presentation and contribution of the organization.
“Basketball on Wheels” is a basketball game for persons on wheelchairs and this very exciting game for disabled persons is now gaining recognition worldwide.
The concept still follows the traditional rules in basketball only that the players are all handicapped persons on wheel chairs.
OHPWDHA president Raul Tolinero said basketball on wheels will surely entertain visitors and guests as the players they have invited are all professional players.
“We have invited two professional teams and cash prizes await the champion of the tourney,” the president of the first ever association for disabled homeowners said.
Tolinero said this is already the second time that the association has sponsored the same event to entertain the people living in Calaanan Relocation site and its neighboring places.
“We brought the game in the relocation site since these people inside the relocation, who are mostly indigents and low income earners cannot actually watch “basketball on wheels” because they are special games only and often sponsored during fiestas.”
Adison Nadela, event chairperson added that this event is proudly sponsored by Globe, Dunkin Donut, Modtrade, City Government of Cagayan de Oro, Waterlite, and Fighter Wine.
“I will also give my special thanks for the support given to us by ABS-CBN, Canitoan Barangay Council, CEADORF and all the people who supported us to make this event a reality on scheduled date,” Nadela stressed.
He said on May 1 prior to the tournament, a motorcade will take place at Canitoan poblacion participated in by the Barangay Council, various local organizations and the candidates for Miss Calaanan 2010 beauty tilt.
OHPWDHA is the first ever organization of persons with disabilities that benefited from the joint housing project for the disabled of the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, Oro Habitat for Humanities and Lions International. OHPWDHA is also the first housing project for the disabled in Mindanao, funded by Lions International, implemented by Oro Habitat and supported by the City of Cagayan de Oro which donated the lots.
