SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews / 18 Nov) – Duathletes in Northern Mindanao are now gearing up for the first ever duathlon event in this city on Dec. 7. It is being co-hosted by Surigao Triathlon Team and the Surigao Runners Club.
“It’s a run-bike-run challenge and we will be happy to see some duathletes from other places in the country to participate in this activity,” said Dr. Remy Jay Gonzales, president of the Surigao Triathlon Team. Each participant will first run 5 kilometers, bike 30 kilometers, then run for another five kilometers more.
Registration fee is P600 per participant.
The event will start and finish at the Ipil National High School.
Atty. Ingemar P. Macarine, president of the Surigao Runners Club, said proceeds of the event will be used for the benefit of athletes of the said school.
Macarine said winners will receive cash prizes, while finishers will have medals and shirts.
“We are calling duathletes, triathletes, cyclists and runners to participate in this activity,” he said.
Macarine said more and more participants are registering in this competition. He expects sports fanatics from other areas like Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and Surigao del Sur to join the athletic event.
“I am very excited for this competition which will take place in my city. It’s gonna be my debut also,” said Edwin dela Cruz, a cyclist from here.
He said he has seen a number of people already preparing for the duathlon.
