TAGUM CITY (MindaNews / 6 May) – The National Capital Region contingent still remains the leader in medal tally in the ongoing 58th Palarong Pambansa while host Davao Region holds on to 10th place.
This as Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario remains optimistic that the host’s standing could still improve in the remaining games.
The national games formally kicked off on Monday and will end on Saturday, May 9.
As of 9:30pm Wednesday (May 6), the NCR earned 34 gold medals, 29 silver and 21 bronze. The Southern Tagalog-Calabarzon region tails NCR with 23 gold, 14 silver and 21 bronze. Western Visayas region ranks third with 14 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze.
Host Davao Region is now at 10th place, earning its first three gold medals Wednesday afternoon; it now has 11 silver and 10 bronze.
The secondary tennis teams of boys and girls earned the first two golds for the host region and Bernice Elesterio added another gold medal for the 50-meter breaststroke swimming for elementary.
At the bottom of the ranking is Region 1 (Ilocos Region) with one gold and one silver, and 10 bronze.
Before the start of the Palarong Pambansa, Del Rosario said the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) is aiming to perform better than its standing in the national games last year, when it placed eighth in last year’s games in Laguna.
The governor said they are now aiming to land in the top five. (Keith Bacongco / MindaNews)
