A Gingoog City correspondent of a community newspaper based in Cagayan de Oro City has reported receiving death threats from a Community Environment and Natural Resources officer (CENRO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Gingoog City.
Edwin Iyo, a correspondent of the Goldstar Daily, said the CENRO, whom he identified as Felipe Carolina, contacted him over his cell phone on February 16, and threatened to shoot him dead.
Iyo told NUJP that Carolina was offended by Iyo’s text message which called the DENR’s attention over the conduct of certain DENR personnel manning a checkpoint in Barangay (village) Anakan, Gingoog City. The text message, which detailed the alleged extortion operation of some DENR personnel manning the checkpoint, was also forwarded by Iyo to the Region 10 Executive Director of the DENR, Edilberto Buiser.
Iyo said he has reported the matter to the editor in chief of the Goldstar Daily Herbie Gomez who advised him to proceed to Cagayan de Oro City.
