Road accident kills 5, injures 17; victims were on their way to a funeral

The passengers were from the peace zone of Barangay Banayal Tulunan in North Cotabato and were on their way to Matalam to attend a funeral of a relative on Wednesday.

Killed on the spot were Merlinda Calamba, 45; Ricardo Cantomayor, 70; Anita Condez, 45;  14-month old Eugene Alicante, and 18-month old Charles John Hansly Campano.

Fourteen victims remain in critical condition at the Cotabato Provincial hospital in Barangay Amas, Kidapawan City.

Provincial hospital chief nurse Felina Hernandez identified the injured as Violeta Alemania; Elsie Campano; one surnamed Calambro; Merlina Sabrillio; Leuterio Campano; Reynaldo Historia; Ronie Cagud; Narsiso Calpafuro; Joylyn Campano; Christ May Abayon; Leonardo Amalia; Gerarld Tacardon. Two still unidentified women were among those injured, too,.

Edcel Tagud, Modesto Tacardon and Ruben Alemania were pronounced out of danger but were still being treated at the provincial hospital due to bruises and wounds in their body.

The Isuzu elf bearing plate number GTK-232, driven by Toto Cagud, was on its way to Barangay Imelda in Matalam for the burial of a relative tomorrow.

German Braga, a relative of the victims, said the driver lost control due to problems with the brake.
