But Lorenzo Jungco, the Department of Foreign Affairs officer handling Vecina’s case, said they have not yet received a copy of the court decision but the news of the sentence was relayed to the DFA by the Philippine embassy in Kuwait.
In a long distance telephone conversation with Carlos Bautista, executive assistant of Gov. Jesus Sacdalan, Jungco assured that officials from the embassy and the DFA are still exerting all means to save Vecina’s life. He stressed that the case is still appealable in Kuwaiti court.
Vecina, 28, is a native of Barangay Dalapitan in Matalam, North Cotabato.
Last January, Vecina’s husband Leo wrote a letter to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo asking her to “exert all means” to save his wife’s life.
“I’ve already accepted the fate of my wife. But I still hope that our government could do something to help her,” Leo said when interviewed by DXND Radio for Peace.
The couple has two children — Quennie Jane, 7, and King James 3.
The North Cotabato provincial government has pledged to help May’s family, especially in the constant monitoring of her case. (Williamor A. Magbanua / MindaNews)
