MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/19 October) - One hundred and three candidates are vying for the 46 barangay chair posts in the city which are up for grabs on Oct. 25, with 11 barangays seeing three- to four-cornered fights.
Twenty-three barangays are witnessing one-on-one races while six incumbent barangay chairs are running unopposed.
Based on a list shown to MindaNews which excludes Barangays Violeta and Zamboanguita, 963 candidates are contesting 368 posts for barangay council members.
The barangays with three to four bets for barangay chair are barangays Apo Macote, Casisang, Kalasungay, Kibalabag, Maligaya, Managok, Poblacion 11, San Jose, Sumpong, Simaya, and Zamboanguita.
Among the candidates for barangay chair were candidates for city councilors who lost in the May 2010 local polls.
The villages where the incumbent chairs are running unopposed are Bangcud, Imbayao, Indalasa, Poblacion 2, St. Peter, and Sinanglanan.
The top five barangays with the highest number of candidates for kagawad are Casisang (43), Sumpong (36), Cabangahan (35), Apo Macote and Poblacion 9 (34).
There are eleven barangays in the city which the Philippine National Police considered to be areas of concern. Most of these are in the Upper Pulangi area. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)
