DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 Dec) - Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and Eid’l Fitr, the Islamic Feast of the Sacrifice marking the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, are among the national holidays for 2001 listed in President Benigno Aquino’s Proclamation No. 84.
Under Proclamation 84, the regular holidays are January 1 (New Year’s Day), April 9 (Araw ng Kagitingan), April 21 (Maundy Thursday), April 22 (Good Friday), May 1 (Labor Day), June 12 (Independence Day), August 29 (National Heroes Day), December 25 (Christmas Day) and December 30 (Rizal Day).
The special non-working holidays are August 21 (Ninoy Aquino Day), November 1 (All Saints Day), and December 31 as the last day of the year.
In the same Proclamation, there will be no classes in all levels on February 25, the anniversary of the EDSA revolution.
Proclamatio 84 also provides that the proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha will be issued “after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient.”
The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos “shall inform the Office of the President on which day the holiday shall fall.” (MindaNews)
