2 police combat companies deployed to Basilan

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (MindaNews/26 Jan) – The Philippine National Police has deployed two companies of combatant policemen from the various regions to Basilan to help curb criminality and pursue Abu Sayyaf bandits.
Chief Supt. Felicisimo Khu, chief of the police’s Directorate for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO) in Western Mindanao, said the decision for the deployment of policemen from other regions was arrived at when Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo and PNP Director-General Raul Bacalzo visited this province two weeks ago.
Khu said they will augment the 708 policemen in the campaign against lawless elements.
The Abu Sayyaf bandits are still holding hostages Filipino-Chinese businessman Lario Tam delos Santos, who was kidnapped last December 16 from his resort in Barangay Lanote, this city.
Khu said the deployed policemen will assist the city or municipal police forces where they will be assigned.
One of the companies is from the Police Regional Office-3 (PRO-3) Public Safety Battalion while the other is from the Police Regional Office-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-ARMM) Public Safety Battalion.
They arrived here Monday aboard separate commercial vessels via Zamboanga City.
Khu said the two companies of combatant policemen will be deployed to this city and in nearby towns of Maluso and Lamitan, the three areas being considered as the island’s trading centers.
He disclosed that more policemen from other regions will be deployed to this province, which comprises of one city and 12 municipalities, including two island towns. This province has a total of 225 barangays with 496,503 population.
Before their deployment Tuesday, Khu and Basilan police director Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo oriented the policemen on the culture of Basileños as well as the prevailing situation in this province.
“My order to you is to be impartial in implementing the law,” Khu told the policemen.
Khu added that they should “implement the law without fear or favor” as he reminded them to be courteous while rendering duty.
Gov. Jum Akbar welcomed the deployment of combatant policemen from the other regions to this province.
Akbar said the deployment of more policemen will boost the government’s campaign against lawless elements. (MindaNews)
