DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/25 January) A village leader here has appealed for help to ship to this city some 50 computers donated by a Rotary chapter in Australia, for distribution to three public schools here.
Nancy Cortes, a councilor of Barangay 76-A Bucana, said the International Rotary of Tasmania, Australia has agreed to donate about 50 computers and to ship them to Manila. Cortes initiated contact with the Rotary club last year and the donation was finalized after a representative visited the three schools that Cortes identified as beneficiaries.
She said the shipment is expected to reach Manila in March this year, according to her Tasmania-based sister, who helped broker the donation. But Cortes appealed for help to defray the shipment cost from Manila to Davao City. “It may cost around P42,000 from what I learned from others who have businesses that need shipping.”
“We need to get them soon. That’s the least that I can do to my constituents, especially the schools and day care centers,” she added. The three schools, she said, “have only two computers for laboratory and classroom use of students.”
The computers are to be distributed to the SIR Elementary School, Bucana Elementary School and the Kabacan Elementary School.
Barangay 76-A is the biggest barangay in the city, a big portion of that considered slum areas.
A school in Tasmania which is replacing the computers of its Information Technology section with new ones, donated the computers along with its accessories.
Cortes said the computers had been moved out of the school and transferred to her sister’s house for packing.
Cortes said that in November, she sent photographs of the three schools that she promised the Rotary would be the recipients of the computers. The IT expert in the International Rotary of Tasmania is also the head of the IT unit of the school. (MindaNews)
