ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/20 February) – The Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has allocated P32 million for the construction of a fish port complex in the province of Sulu to help fishermen and sea farmers increase their income.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan said Sunday that DA Secretary Proceso Alcala will lead the groundbreaking ceremony on February 24 in Maimbung town.
Tan said that among the facilities to be built in the fish port complex is a 10-ton cold storage plant where fishermen can deposit their catch.
The cold storage and fish port will be equipped with a land-based power generator to supply the electrical requirements of the facilities, the governor said.
Construction of the facilities is expected to be completed in a few months and these will be operational before the end of this year, he added.
Tan said the fish port complex will generate local employment and will boost the income of the local fisher folk.
Fishing is the most important industry in Sulu, which comprises 19 towns, since the Sulu Sea is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Philippines. (MindaNews)
