DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/06 March) – A 33-year old doctor from Davao City is the country’s first recipient of the Most Outstanding Resident in Internal Medicine award-PCP Exemplar in Internal Medicine given by the Philippine College of Physicians during the 41st Annual Convention held in Manila on May 1 to 4.
Dr. Mary Grace M. Magallen, Chief Resident of Department of Internal Medicine in San Pedro Hospital of Davao City, won over 15 other nominees from accredited training programs in Residency in Internal Medicine from all over the Philippines. Of the 16 nominees, six were chosen finalists and were interviewed by the panel of judges on May 1.
Magallen, also a registered medical technologist, was a consistent honor student at the Davao Medical School Foundation where she finished Medicine in 2002. She obtained her BS Medical Technology degree from the San Pedro College in 1998.
Magallen finished high school at the University of the Immaculate Conception in 1994 and elementary at the University of Mindanao in 1990.
She served as Medical Officer IV at the Department of Health regional office from 2004 to 2008, serving as DOH representative for Asuncion and San Isidro towns in Davao del Norte; was resident physician at the Bishop Joseph Regan Hospital in Tagum City, the Rivera Medical Center also in Tagum and the Navares Medical Clinic in Panabo City.
Magallen also served as clinical instructor at the Bethesda School for Tomorrow, Inc., in Panabo City, an instructor on Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and is an expert phlebotomist or one who draws blood for analysis or transfusion.
She has done several research papers, some of them presented abroad. Magallen’s most recent research paper, “The Effects of Pantroprazole IV Drip vs Pantoprazole IV Bolus on Stigmata of Recent Hemorrhage among patients with Nonvariceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding,” co-authored by Dr. Marilyn O. Arguillas, was accepted for poster presentation at the recently concluded PCP Annual Convention and has been accepted for oral presentation at the Digestive Diseases Week 2011 in Chicago, Illinois next week.
In 2009, Magallen’s paper, “Giant Brunneroma: A Rare Cause of Anemia, was accepted for poster presentation at Asia Pacific Digestive Week 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan. In2010, her paper, “Fulminant Hepatitis and Salmonella Sepsis: A Case Report,” was accepted for poster presentation at the Asia Pacific Digestive Week 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Aside from being a doctor, medical technologist and researcher, Magallen is also a karate/judo master, cooks, does veterinary work and has won first in a flower arrangement contest. (MindaNews)
