DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/15 May) — This week’s sessions at the 4th Mindanao Summer Institute of Journalism include a sharing on Mindanao history, reporting Business, the Lumads and Health.
BusinessWorld reporter Carmelito Q. Francisco will share his experiences as a business reporter for the Reporting Business session at the second floor of Lorie’s Café along Araullo Ext. near Jacinto Ext. on Monday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m.
Fr. Albert E. Alejo, SJ or Paring Bert and Manobo community leader Beting Colmo will tackle Reporting the Lumads (Indigenous Peoples) from 3 to 5 p.m Tuesday, May 17 (instead of the original 9 a.m. schedule) at F712, Finster Hall, Ateneo de Davao University.
Prof. Rudy Buhay Rodil will discuss Mindanao history and how it has affected our present and how we can move forward, on Thursday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Boji Bote of M Magazine will handle Creative Design on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lorie’s Café.
Also on May 21, Dr. Jose M. Tiongco, Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Mission Group Health and Hospital Services Cooperative-Philippines (MMGHHSCP) will discuss Reporting Health from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at F712, Finster Hall of the Ateneo de Davao University.
The sessions from May 23 to 30 include Mining 101, Governance, Ethics, Public Journalism, Human Rights, Basic Maguindanaon, Disasters, Environment, Investigative Journalism, Video Documentaries, Peace Talks 101, Narrative Reporting and Agricutlure.
Mining 101 on May 23 and 24 will feature Engr. Mario Luis Jacinto, former regional chief of the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau of Region 11 and later Regional Executive Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Jean Marie Ferraris, Team Leader of Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center-Kasama sa Kalikasan (LRC-KsK) will discuss Mining in Mindanao. Representatives of the DENR national office and representatives from the Coalition for Responsible Mining will also be among the speakers.
Last week, the Summer Institute held sessions Map-Reading and a three-day Media Education seminar conducted by the Titus Brandsma Media Center’s Fr. Christian Buenafe, O.Carm, Angela Blardony Ureta, aO.Carm, and Rev. Fernando Cruz Lopez.
The 4th Mindanao Summer Institute of Journalism is an initiative of the Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao University. This year, it is being held in cooperation with the The Asia Foundation, Titus Brandsma Media Center, AusAId, Canadian Embassy, with the support of the Center for Community Journalism and Development (CCJD), Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) Mindanao Media Forum, Mindanao Times, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Philippine Information Agency, University of Mindanao, UMBN and VERA Files.
