DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 May) – Mining 101, Governance, Corruption, the Peace Process and Reporting Disasters are this week’s topics in the 4th Mindanao Summer Institute of Journalism.
Mining 101 will be tackled in two morning sessions on May 23 and 24, both from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Ateneo de Davao University.
Geologist Maria Luisa Jacinto, who served as OIC regional director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) from August 2000 to March 2005 and chief geologist of the MGB from 1998 to 2000, will discuss the basics of Mining on Monday, May 23, followed by Jean Ferraris of the Legal and Natural Resources Center (LRC) who will discuss mining in Mindanao and the 1995 Mining Act at F711, Finster Hall, Ateneo de Davao.
On May 24, Engr. Glenn Marcelo Noble, Chief of Planning and Policy of the MGB national office will discuss “The Benefits of Mining.” Engr. Larry Heradez, chief of the Mining Tenements Management will talk about “The Mining Act — a Safety Net of the Mining Industry,” including relevant provisions of the Mining Act of 1995 and the roles of critical players in the industry, while Engr. Constancio Paye Jr., MGB director of Region 12 will be on hand to assist in answering queries from the participants. Venue is at T301 Thibault Hall of the ADDU.
On May 24 and 25, UP Professor Yvonne Chua, also of VERA Files, will handle Reporting Governance: Beyond City Hall and the Provincial Capitol, at F712 on May 24 and T302 on May 25. Sessions start at 9 a .m.
Sessions on Reporting Human Rights, Corruption, the Peace Process and Disasters will be held on May 26 to 28. Rowena Paraan of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines will handle Human Rights on May 26 and Corruption on May 27; Reporting Disasters on May 28 will be handled by officials of the Regional Disaster Reduction and Risk Management Council, former Mindanao Presidential adviser Jesus Dureza and Amalia Bandiola of Mindanao Times while Reporting the Government-National Democratic Front Peace Process will be handled by Atty. Carlos Isagani Zarate, a former reporter who writes a column for the Philippine Daily Inqurier. The GPH-Bangsamoro Peace Processes will be handled by Carolyn O. Arguillas of MindaNews next week.
The 4th Mindanao Summer Institute of Journalism, which started on May 9 and will end on May 30, is an initiative of the Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao University. This year, it is being held in cooperation with the The Asia Foundation, Titus Brandsma Media Center, AusAId, Canadian Embassy, with the support of the Center for Community Journalism and Development (CCJD), Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) Mindanao Media Forum, Mindanao Times, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Philippine Information Agency, University of Mindanao, UMBN and VERA Files.
