ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/18 May) – Zamboanga del Norte native Dondon Sultan of the Ala Stable will try to snatch the Philippine welterweight boxing crown from Boholano Arnel Tinampay in a 12-round encounter on May 28 in this southern port city.
The Tinampay-Sultan title fight in the 147-pound category will be the main event in the five-match “Golpe-Golpe na Zamboanga” of the Blue Stallion and Ala Promotions.
Congressman Erico Basilio Fabian, who owns the Blue Stallion Promotions, said the free-admission fights will be held at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Coliseum in Barangay Tetuan.
One of the four other fights, which serve as the preliminaries to the Tinampay-Sultan encounter, will pit Cebuano James Bacon against Daniel Mansing of Ozamis City.
Bacon, who belongs to Ala Stable, and Mansing will slug it out in a 10-round super featherweight (130 pounds) non-title bout.
Another boxer from Ozamis City, Jhony Gemino from the Bong Yap Stable will fight in an eight-round super flyweight (115 pounds) match against Rogen Flores of Dipolog City, who is from the Zamboanga del Norte Stable.
Kid Ventual of the Blue Stallion Promotions will see action against John Rey Lansa of Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur in a six-round light flyweight (l08 pounds) match.
Zamboangueño boxer Joner Ollano will slug it out against Romy Manding of Ozamis City in a four-round minimum weight (105 pounds) match.
Fabian said the staging of the boxing fights is part of his sports tourism program aimed to make Zamboanga City as the sports capital in the region as well as in Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Marvin Mabait of the Blue Stallion Promotions added another feather to his cap by scoring a first-round technical knockout against Rex Granada of General Santos City to capture the Mindanao Professional Boxing Federation (MPBF) Bantamweight crown.
The Mabait-Granada fight was held last Friday in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay. (MindaNews)
