ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/23 September) – Three people were injured in an explosion shortly before noon Thursday in a junk shop in this city, police officials said.
Police Station 7 commander Chief Insp. Felixberto Martinez said the incident took place 11:15 a.m. at Curuan Junk Shop in Barangay Tumaga.
Martinez identified the victims as Micheal Ebol, Jason Orquijo, and Oscar Aballes, all employees of the junk shop owned by Marilyn Go.
Investigation showed that the victims were unloading scrap metals from a cargo truck when a sack containing scrap materials exploded, Martinez said.
City police director Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said that based on their findings the sack containing scrap metals that exploded had traces of “flash powder.”
“May nakaipon na pulbura ng firecrackers sa isang container. Sumabog ito dahil nagkaroon ng friction while they were unloading the sack of scrap metals,” De Ocampo said.
“They were injured by the scrap metals’ shards that served as shrapnel,” he added.
He said the injuries of the victims, who were hospitalized, are not life threatening.
Martinez said they will investigate where the metals came from. (MindaNews)
