ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/02 October) – The first ever kidney transplant operations in the region have been successful.
The transplant was performed Saturday at the Western Mindanao Medical Center (WMMC), a private tertiary hospital in this city, on a 45-year-old male patient from Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Dr. Michael Abutazil, WMMC Renal Transplant Unit head said that both the recipient and his 41-year old donor cousin “are doing fine” after the transplant operations.
Abutazil said that both were placed under a 48-hour post-operation observation.
The operations started at 1 p.m. and were completed at 6 p.m., the physician said.
He said before the surgery that the donor could be discharged from the hospital three days after the transplant operations and the recipient after seven days.
Seven doctors performed the operations.
Abutazil said they are looking forward to performing transplant operations on two other patients.
In Zamboanga City alone, there are 1,000 patients who need kidney transplant. (MindaNews)
