BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/25 January) – Butuan and Davao cities joined five other areas across the country in last Sunday’s fun run that broke a Guinness world record set in Pasig City in 2010.
At least 6,000 individuals here took part in the largest single sports run event that exceeded the target number of 300,000 runners in the seven designated points.
The “2012 Kahit Isang Araw Lang: Unity Run” drew 209,000 running enthusiasts in Metro Manila alone.
The “Run for Pasig River” on Oct. 10, 2010 had 116,086 participants and landed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
“The fun run is in partnership with the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Adopt-A-School Program in which the proceeds of the event would be donated to provide computer facilities to our public school students,” said Ryan Ramos of Avant-Garde which organized the event.
Aside from Butuan, Davao and Pasig, Kahit Isang Araw Lang was also staged in the cities of Cebu, Bacolod, Tacloban and Puerto Princesa.
Cagayan de Oro City was initially included as one of the staging points, but after the “Sendong” tragedy last month the organizers decided to skip the city.
Ramos added that in light of the recent events in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities they are now making extra efforts in working with DepEd to provide additional classrooms there.
“Right now our two mobile schools which were part of our Dunong-Gulong project with DepEd are en route to Cagayan de Oro City. We hope that with our effort more school children will have a far better chance in learning,” he said. (Erwin Mascarinas/MindaNews)
