ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/13 February) – Newly-installed Zamboanga Peninsula police director Chief Supt. Nathaniel Estilles disclosed that his command will implement a comprehensive gun ban in this city.
Estilles’s statement came after he received a copy of the joint guidelines on the implementation of firearms and explosives ban in this city from Mayor Celso Lobregat in a courtesy visit Friday.
In furnishing the copy, Lobregat has strongly urged Estilles to help in the strict enforcement of the gun ban in a bid to thwart all forms of criminality in this city.
The joint guidelines, which was formulated in 2004 when Lobregat was first elected as mayor of this city, was signed and agreed upon by concerned government agencies, including officials from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Included in the guidelines is the limiting to only two the number of security escorts of politicians from nearby provinces.
Estilles said he will review the guidelines after which a comprehensive plan will be formulated and implemented.
He disclosed Lobregat wanted a strict gun ban implementation specifically on the proliferation of illegal firearms.
“We have to come out with plans together with (Zamboanga City police director) Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo and then we will also involve other agencies,” Estilles said.
“We want to implement a comprehensive and effective,” he added. (MindaNews)
