DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/9 February ) – About P1-million worth of illegally cut logs were seized by an anti-logging task force, which includes the police and the military, in separate operations here recently.
Lando Polikot and Nelver Bibero, both from Agusan del Sur, were nabbed at a checkpoint in Barangay Ilang, Bunawan on Feb. 5, according to Ma. Rita Fe Sison, chief of public affairs of the Department of Environment Natural Resources-XI.
The illegally cut logs and sliced timber were reportedly worth P576,960.
Sison said Polikot and Bibero will be facing charges for violation of Sec. 7 of Presidential Decree 705 of the Revised Forestry Code.
The DENR reported that there were 1,952 pieces of flitches with a volume of 18,0000 board feet inside two container vans.
On Feb. 7, two prime mover trucks were flagged down by the DENR at a checkpoint in Kapalong, Davao del Norte. Authorities seized 130 pieces of lawaan lumber measuring 12,809 board feet with an estimated worth of P333,000.
Operatives likewise secured 78 pieces of logs worth P90,000. The logs were reportedly found in the Kapalong River and the owner has not been identified yet.
“These logs will be donated to the Department of Education for making new chairs and desks,” Sison said. (MindaNews)
