ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/15 February) – Anti-bomb personnel of the Zamboanga City Police Office retrieved Japanese cluster bombs from a construction site in this city, a police official disclosed Wednesday.
City police director Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said the cluster bombs were found by construction workers digging for a post foundation last Monday in Barangay Sta. Catalina.
Recovered were one 60-millimeter (mm) high explosive mortar, one 75.2-mm high explosive mortar, two 105-mm and one 155-mm projectiles, de Ocampo said.
He said the recovered bombs, which would be properly disposed later, were taken to the explosive and ordnance demolition office for safekeeping.
The vintage bombs could explode if not properly handled, he said.
De Ocampo said they have advised the construction workers to be careful in conducting diggings and to report to them in case they discovered more cluster bombs in their work site. (MindaNews)
