ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/15 September) – A tornado hit Kabasalan town in Zamboanga Sibugay before dawn Saturday, destroying an estimated P200,000 worth of properties, officials said.
A pedicab driver was also injured in the incident.
In a text message to reporters here, Kabasalan Mayor George Cainglet said the tornado affected Barangay Poblacion, which is the government and commercial center of the town.
Adriano Fuego, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council regional director, said the tornado that occurred at around 3 a.m. Saturday partially destroyed the town’s public market and police station.
“Natanggal ang isang bahagi ng bubung ng public market at police station (Portions of the roof of the public market and the police station were removed),” Fuego added.
A privately-owned warehouse located in nearby Barangay Goodyear was also partially damaged, he said.
The wounded pedicab driver was identified as Bebot Baricua, 45, who was injured in the foot by a corrugated galvanized iron sheet. (MindaNews)
