DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/26 April) — Mindanao’s six regions won a total of 49 gold, 50 silver and 65 bronze medals in the Palarong Pambansa 2013 in Dumaguete City.
Mindanao’s harvest is based on partial and official results posted on the sports competition’s official website evening of April 26.
The Palarong Pambansa Program, an annual athletic competition conducted by the Department of Education and participated in by elementary and high school students both from public and private schools in the country’s 17 regions, opened on April 21 and will end on April 27.
This year’s theme is “Sports: Road to Peace and Progress.”
Regions 10 (Northern Mindanao) and 12 (Southeastern Mindanao/Soccsksargen), contributed the most number of medals for Mindanao.
Region 10 won 30 golds, 21 silvers and 21 bronze medals; Region 12 got seven golds, 14 silvers and 14 bronzes; Region 11 (Southern Mindanao/Davao) received nine golds, six silvers and 15 bronzes; Caraga got three golds, six silvers and seven bronzes; Region 9 (Western Mindanao/Zamboaga) won one silver and six bronze medals while the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao got two silver and two bronze medals.
Twenty-nine of the gold, 24 of the silver and 29 of the bronze medals were won by Mindanawon athletes in the elementary level while the high school athletes contributed 20 golds, 20 silvers and 36 bronze medals.
A total of 303 gold, 305 silver and 365 bronze medals were won in the competition among the country’s 17 regions.
Region 10 placed third in the number of gold medals won, after the National Capital Region’s (NCR) 101 and Western Visayas’ 61.
For overall championship points, NCR scored 458 points followed by Western Visayas’ 353.67, Central Visayas’ 216.5, and Northern Mindanao’s 193 points.
Mindanawon athletes in the elementary level excelled in swimming, athletics and taekwondo while the high school athletes scored high in the same categories plus archery and arnis. (MindaNews)
