COTABATO CITY (MindaNews / 15 May) – A seven-month-old baby died while her mother was wounded when a grenade lobbed at their rooftop in Kabacan, North Cotabato exploded dawn today.
Supt. Leo Ajero, Kabacan police chief, relayed that around 2:40 a.m., a loud explosion was heard in Malvar Street of Kabacan town.
The infant victim was identified as Chelzy Jay Eliarda Aguinaldo, who died instantaneously after he suffered shrapnel wounds in his head. Her mother Suhainah was also hurt when grenade splinters hit her right arm.
The eldest son, of grade school age who slept with the victims, was reportedly unharmed.
The family’s partriach, known only as PJ, was not at home during the explosion, police said.
Police are now conducting extensive investigation on the attack.
But according to a neighbor opined: “It may be a random act of violence as desperate move of losing candidates.” But she refused to be identified.
Though the election is over and winners in this town will soon be declared, police could not say if the incident is related to poll activities.
Ajero said they will be looking at the personal angle, as to why there was an attack on a woman and her child.
