South Upi mayoralty bet ambushed; nephew killed

COTABATO CITY (MindaNews/11 May) — A two-vehicle convoy of a mayoralty candidate in South Upi, Maguindanao was ambushed before dusk Saturday, on the of a peace covenant-signing among the seven mayortaly bets.

Reports from the 1st Marine Brigade public information office said the group of  Baba Omar of the Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP). was ambushed at 5:40 p.m. along Kilometer 30, Barangay Kibleg in the nearby town of North Upi.

He survived but his nephew Naser Kwag was killed and another supporter named Turno Omar suffered gunshot wounds in the body.

They were brought to Datu Blah Sinsuat Hospital in North Upi town.

The victims came from the “miting de avance,” the last grand political rally of  the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) in Sultan Kudarat town.

The 1st Marine Brigade had initiated a signing of a  peace covenant among the seven mayoralty candidates and their slate at 8 a.m. on Sunday in South Upi,Maguindanao.

Baba Omar is running under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) in the seven-way mayoral race in South Upi, against Abdullah “Bedz” Campong (Liberal Party), Samson Garcia (Aksyon Demokratiko), Elsie Travilla (Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino) and independent candidates Imelda Estorninos, Jude Martin and Israel Sinsuat.  (Ferdinandh B.
