5 killed in Surigao town dawn fire

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews/08 Oct.) — Five persons died in a fire in Claver, Surigao del Norte at dawn on Sunday.

SPO1 Joel Verano, an investigator at the Claver police station said the victims were identified as Glicerio Sr., 72; Mitchay, 6; Marites, 46; Glicerio Jr., 4, all surnamed Macalos; and Axel John M. Laguna, 11.

Verano said the victims were sleeping in their house cum auto spare parts shop in Purok 6, Barangay Taganito when fire broke out at the adjacent boarding house.

The police investigator said all the victims were trapped inside their store.

He pegged the damage to property at P2.5 million.

The fire bureau was still investigating the cause of the incident.

Last September 20, a fire broke out in the same village destroying at least 50 houses made of light materials. No one was reported injured. (Roel N. Catoto/MindaNews)
