ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/30 November) – Two construction workers kidnapped over two months ago were rescued Friday in Sulu province, a police official announced Saturday.
Senior Supt. Abraham Orbito, Sulu police director, said the victims were rescued by policemen and barangay officials around 7 a.m. Friday at Sitio Boh, Barangay Sukuban in Omar town.
Rescued were Lindo Estrada, 50, and Pedro Petrosa, 59 of Barangays Sta. Catalina and Canelar, this city, respectively, according to Orbito.
They were kidnapped by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits at a construction site in the evening of Sept. 23 in Simunul, Tawi-Tawi along with a companion Ricardo Rafal, who was earlier freed.
Orbito said the victims were rescued after the bandits fled upon sensing the arrival of policemen and barangay officials.
“Due to the pressure on the kidnappers and to avoid being caught or neutralized they hastily escaped leaving [behind] their captives,” the police official said.
He said the victims were brought to the Trauma Hospital at Camp Bautista in Jolo for medical check-up and debriefing.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan II commended the policemen and barangay officials for their joint efforts in rescuing the victims. (MindaNews)
