ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/05 December) – The Jordanian journalist who was kidnapped 18 months ago by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits escaped late Wednesday from his captors in Sulu, officials said.
Baker Atyani, 44, was admitted at the Integrated Provincial Health Office and underwent debriefing after his reported recovery by police forces, Task Force Sulu commander Col.
Jose Johriel Cenabre said.
Cenabre, who is also the Second Marine Brigade commander, said Atyani looked fine although he was weak, pale and has lost weight.
Atyani, who works for a Dubai-based television, was sporting long hair, mustache and beard when recovered by the policemen.
Cenabre did not discuss the details of the debriefing saying “it is considered operational information.
”
He said part of the debriefing was to know how Atyani escaped from his abductors.
Senior Supt. Abraham Orbito, Sulu police director said policemen recovered the victim around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Barangay Igasan, Patikul town.
Atyani was kidnapped along with two Filipino crewmen in June 2012 while they were about to interview members of the Abu Sayyaf in the hinterlands of Sulu.
