CHED approves tuition hike in 15 Region 9 schools

ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/26 May) – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has approved the request of 15 of the 16 tertiary schools in the region to impose tuition increase for the school year 2014-2015.

Dr. Juanito Demetrio, CHED regional director, said the agency disapproved the request of the 16th school due to its late submission of requirements to his office.

The requirements include consultations with stakeholders as well as justification on how the income derived from the increase would be used.

Demetrio said 70 percent of the increase will go to the salary of the teachers, 20 percent for the upgrade of school facilities such as laboratories and purchase of books and the remaining 10 percent is for return of investment.

He said this year’s average tuition increase will be 4.30 percent, which is lower compared to the rate imposed last year.

He noted that only eight of the 16 tertiary schools in the region implemented tuition increase for the school year 2013-2014 thus they expected the rest of the schools to ask for increase for this school year.

He said seven of the 15 schools whose request for tuition increase was approved are based in this city, three in Zamboanga del Norte, three in Zamboantga del Sur, one in Zamboanga Sibugay, and one in Isabela City in Basilan.

He said they carefully evaluated the requests for tuition fee increase and found them acceptable. (MindaNews)
