MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/20 May) – National Union of Journalists of the Philippines chair Rowena Paraan has been named as one of the 100 Information Heroes by the France-based Reporters San Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders), the NUJP said in a statement today.
NUJP said this is the first time RSF published a list of profiles of 100 Information Heroes.
RSF said in its statement that “these ‘100 heroes’ help to promote the freedom enshrined in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the freedom to ‘seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.’ They put their ideals in the service of the common good. They serve as examples.”
NUJP added Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senate public information committee chair Grace Poe sent their commendations to NUJP chair Rowena Paraan for making it to the RSF list.
“I admire your commitment to uphold the truth and justice, ensuring that our people will have informed choices on pertinent issues. The passion and dedication you have put in your work and advocacy have brought pride and honor to our country,” NUJP quoted Binay’ letter to Paraan dated May 5.
Meanwhile, Poe filed Senate Resolution 629 lauding the information hero.
“Paraan is a living legacy to a profession widely considered as a dangerous profession. She is highly regarded for her active role in defending press freedom and in upholding the rights of media practitioners,” Poe said in a statement. (MindaNews)
