4 soldiers wounded in Zambo Sur ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/28 July) – Four soldiers were wounded while another one was unscathed in an ambush Sunday staged by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur, a police official disclosed.

Senior Supt. Sofronio Ecaldre, Zamboanga del Sur police director, identified the victims as Sgt. Christopher Lorenzo, Sgt. Ruel Tomogsoc, Sgt. Gilbert Alferez, and Pfc Jervie Roxas of the 1st Cavalry Squadron, Mechanized Infantry Division.

Ecaldre said the wounded soldiers were rushed to the Tigbao Rural Health Center for medical treatment.

He said the five soldiers were aboard a military vehicle driven by Lorenzo when ambushed around 8:45 a.m. Sunday at the Deorok Bridge, in the boundary of Barangays Maragang and Lacupayan in Tigbao.

The police official said the soldiers were traveling from the headquarters of the Mechanized Infantry Division in Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga Del Sur to Camp Gen. Arturo Enrile in Barangay Malagutay, this city when the rebels ambushed them.

He said soldiers and policemen pursued the rebels who fled to the hinterlands of Tigbao. (MindaNews)
