YANGON (MindaNews / 11 Nov) – The Union Election Commission (UEC) has confirmed the victory of Burmese democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi in Sunday’s general elections.
The confirmation came via the 10th release of official election results around 10 a.m.
Suu Kyi is contesting for a seat in the Pyithu Hluttaw or the Lower House in Kawhmu, an agricultural township across the Yangon River from the metropolis.
The latest release of election results shows a further increase in the number of seats captured by the main opposition party National League for Democracy that Suu Kyi heads.
NLD’s tally for Lower House seats increased to 134 from last night’s 78 while that of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, its military-backed main rival, climbed to just eight from five.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the UEC has confirmed the results for 415 seats, which is 36 percent of the total 1,171 seats up for grabs in Myanmar’s second election under the 2008 Constitution written by the then ruling junta.
Suu Kyi is barred by the constitution from the presidency because she had a foreigner spouse.
But she said she will rule Myanmar through her party which is expecting to nominate and get parliamentary nod for its bet to replace current President Thein Sein. (Ryan Rosauro / MindaNews contributor)
