DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/06 December) – The expanded edition of “Rido: Clan Feuding and Conflict Management in Mindanao,” won the National Book Award for Social Sciences category in the 34th National Book Awards in ceremonies held Saturday night at the Old Senate Session Hall of the National Museum.
The National Book Awards is given every year by the National Book Development Board (NDBD) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) to the best books written, designed, and published in the country.
“Rido,” edited by Wilfredo Magno Torres III and published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, was chosen along with winners in 27 other categories for books published in 2014.
The book contains cases studies from research findings on “rido” (clan conflict) by several Mindanawon scholars and scholars on Mindanao.
“The studies in this volume dal with a type of violent conflict variously referred to as feuding, revenge killing, blood revenge, vendetta, intertribal war and clan conflict,” Torres wrote in his Introduction.
“Characterized by sporadic outbursts of retaliatory violence between families and kinship groups as well as between communities, this phenomenon frequently occurs in areas where government or a central authority is weak and in areas where there is a perceived lack of justice and security,” Torres, who is finishing his PhD at George Mason University in the United States, said.
Torres’ sister, Ma. Teresa, accepted the award on his behalf.
The book’s first edition was published in 2007.
Dr. Steven Rood, Philippine Country Representative of The Asia Foundation wrote in his preface to the new edition that “not only has the demand for the (first edition) exhausted our supply of books but considerable progress has been made in actually resolving cases of rido.” He said the expanded edition, which includes a revised introduction and several additional chapters, “is meant to carry the story forward to the present.”
