SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews/15 June) — A scheduled maintenance shutdown of a power supplier of Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative won’t result in a brownout as a standby modular generation set will offset the power shortage, an official of the utility said.
Engr. Narcisco I. Caliao Jr., Surneco general manager told MindaNews on Wednesday that Therma South Inc. of Aboitiz Power Corp. has scheduled a maintenance shutdown of one of its coal-fired power plants on June 18-July 16.
Caliao said Surneco will lose at least 2.5 megawatts of its contracted supply of five megawatt from TSI.
He said in a text message they will tap their 10-MW modular generation set which was set up last year to offset the reduced power supply.
He admitted the generation set has no provisional authority yet from the Energy Regulatory Commission for its commercial use but they would still use it.
“That’s the only way to avert the brownout and to satisfy the concessionaires in Surigao del Norte,” he explained.
Surneco is servicing Surigao City and 11 towns in Surigao del Norte.
Aside from TSI, Surneco is currently supplied by the National Power Corporation and Filinvest Development Corporation. (Roel N. Catoto/MindaNews)
