Broadcaster arrested for libel in Kidapawan City

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/13 Sept) — The manager of a community radio station in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato has been arrested and detained on two libel cases filed against him by Makilala town Mayor Rudy Caoagdan, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said Tuesday.

NUJP said Dante Encarnacion Tabosares, who is known on-air as Bong Encarnacion, was brought to the office of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Kidapawan, after his arrest Tuesday morning, September 13.

It quoted Tabosares as saying the charges for which he was arrested were actually the second and third filed by Caoagdan.

The broadcaster posted bail for the first charge Friday last week.

Tabosares, station manager of Radyo Bomba 99.5 Rbb Broadcasting Network, told NUJP that a judge had earlier “told me to be ready because I would be facing up to 50 charges.”

NUJP said Tabosares believes “the charges are about issues I raised against Caoagdan during the last elections.”

He said he was never asked to submit a counter-affidavit and explain his side.

He said he still has no lawyer. (MindaNews)
