MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/01 November) — Contractualization will top the agenda when labor groups in Mindanao and the Visayas meet this month in separate summits organized by the Department of Labor.
In a statement, DOLE said Secretary Silvestre Bello III has called for the holding of the summits on November 11 in Davao City and on November 18 in Cebu City.
“We want the labor groups to provide recommendations and inputs on addressing issues concerning labor rights and standards, migration, women’s sector, informal sector, industrial policy and economic roadmap, wages, prices, and tax reforms,” the statement quoted Bello as saying.
Management groups had earlier presented a “win-win proposal” for businesses and workers in order to put a stop to end-of-contract or “endo” scheme. Labor, however , rejected the proposal.
Bello expressed confidence the inputs from the summits would lead to a unified proposal on contractualization.
The statement added that after the summits officials will meet with representatives from both employers and labor to finalize a policy on “endo”.
“Endo” is a practice by employers of hiring workers for less than six months to avoid having to regularize them. (MindaNews)
