Ex-army killed by own sister in Cotabato town

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews / 6 April) – A retired soldier was shot and killed by his own sister after a heated altercation on land issues in Carmen town in North Cotabato, Friday, reports said.

Authorities identified the victim as Jerome Mampenayo, 45, former member of the Philippine Army, and resident of Barangay Katiko in President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.

The suspect is identified as Elena Mampenayo-Orbina, 34, and resident of Carmen, North Cotabato.

Reports from Carmen Police said the victim arrived at his younger sister’s house at Sitio Mahulamod, Barangay Liliongan in Carmen, North Cotabato, around noon Friday, bringing with him a bolo.

But even before Jerome could enter his sister’s house, Elena fired a handgun several times, hitting him on his head and in different parts of the body, according to Supt. Bernard Tayong, spokesperson for the Cotabato Police Provincial Office (CPPO).

The victim died on the spot.

Recovered from the crime scene were spent bullets from a caliber .45 pistol and the bolo, reports added.

The suspect voluntarily yielded to authorities later in the day and said she was ready to face charges to be filed against her by her brother’s family.
