Consunji firm begins demolition of NCCC Mall Davao, five months after the fire

DAVAO CITY  (MindaNews / 19 May) — An official of the DM Consunji, Inc. (DMCI) which is undertaking the four-month demolition of the NCCC Mall Davao starting Saturday, May 19, has clarified it was not the firm that renovated the third floor of the mall where the fire reportedly started on December 23, 2017.

In an e-mailed message to MindaNews, Engr. Teddy A. Irenea, the company’s first vice president for Special Projects Business Unit, said DMCI’s contracts with LTS Malls, Inc., the mother company of the NCCC Group of Companies, cover only the construction of the new NCCC Mall Buhangin along Communal-Indangan Road in Davao City and the demolition of the NCCC Mall in Ma-a.

Thea Padua, public relations manager of the NCCC Mall Davao said on Thursday that DMCI was also the contractor for the renovation of the Ma-a mall’s third floor, but clarified on Friday that it was AC Rockport Construction & Development Corporation, not DMCI.

DMCI was awarded the demolition project last month, Irenea said. He explained that DMCI is separate and distinct from DMCI Holdings.

“This will be our first time to ever work on NCCC Mall Ma-a,” he said.

Padua said the company plans to redevelop the mall. The four-story building has a combined floor area of 60,568 square meters.

The fire killed 37 trapped call center agents and one mall personnel. (Antonio L. Colina IV / MindaNews)
