Police to review policies governing motocross after accident

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 19 June) – Police Regional Office (PRO)11 director Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan has called for a review on laws and policies governing the conduct of motocross and unauthorized racetracks following a racing accident in Barangay Ising, Carmen, Davao del Norte on Sunday that resulted in the death of a spectator and the injury of seven others.

Gaerlan said in a statement on Monday that the Highway Patrol Group is already coordinating with the provincial and municipal police to check if all the organizers have appropriate permits and safety measures for the conduct of a motocross event.

He vowed that the organizers would be held responsible for the death of 26-year-old Tirso Casuga.

A report released by PRO 11 identified the others injured as racer Kent Jerecho C. Dimaano, 19; Gretchan E. Lagat, 28; Efren A. Abella Jr., 27; Christian M. Taba, 15; Jazhin P. Generoso, 13; Jeric P. Tranquilan, 18; and Christian A. Corton, 15.

It said that Dimaano was running at high speed when his motorcycle accidentally swerved upon reaching a curve, throwing himself into the crowd. (Antonio L. Colina IV / MindaNews)
