DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 16 September) — A minor fire at a cinema located on the 4th floor of the NCCC Mall Buhangin occurred at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday but was put out some 15 minutes later.
The fire incident came two months after the NCCC Mall Buhangin opened and nearly nine months since the December 23, 2017 fire at the NCCC Mall Davao in Maa which left 38 workers dead.
In a statement, Thea Padua, public relations manager of the NCCC Mall Davao, said mall workers immediately called the firemen after the fire alarm system sounded at the 4th floor. Firemen responded immediately and put out the fire at 1 a.m.
City Fire Marshall Major Virna Silagan said authorities are investigating the cause of fire but initial investigation revealed it emanated from the speaker of the sound system of the cinema that has yet to be opened to the public.
The four-story mall has four cinemas on the fourth floor. Opening of the cinemas is targeted for next month.
“No customers were on premise at that time and all workers are safe,” Padua said.
Estimated cost of damage has been placed at PhP 400,000.
Padua said the mall has resumed normal operations.
The Lim family opened the Buhangin mall’s supermarket and department store on July 23.
