DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/19 March) — At least 920 families from the towns of San Isidro and Cateel and Mati City in Davao Oriental were displaced after heavy rains brought by tropical depression “Chedeng” caused severe flooding on Monday night.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 3,654 individuals who are residing near riverbanks and other flood-prone areas fled their homes as part of the preemptive response.
“The Local Government Units who have facilitated the evacuation said that the evacuation was implemented smoothly as the residents willingly cooperated with the authorities,” PDRRMO Assistant Department Head Francis Jason Bendulo said in a statement on Tuesday.
Bendulo said the evacuees are now staying in several barangay centers. “The evacuees are now receiving proper interventions and are awaiting clearance for them to return home,” he said.
He said Davao Oriental was placed under Yellow Rainfall Alert as the whole province may still experience light to moderate rains.
He added they are monitoring the water levels in Tagubpo, Sumlog and Cuabo rivers in Lupon town.
Power outages hit the towns of Caraga, Manay and Tarragona around 4am Tuesday.
Local power service provider DORECO was doing repairs and maintenance to restore power.
The Department of Public Works and Highways meanwhile confirmed on Tuesday morning that Masipit Bridge in Barangay Central, Tarragona town was impassable by all types of vehicles due to scouring. (Mart Sambalud/MindaNews)
