MILF leader slain in Cotabato gun attack

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews / 4 Dec) – A deputy commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman in Matalam town in North Cotabato Tuesday, police reports said.

The Matalam municipal police station identified the victim as Ustadz Monsur Embong, 51, of Barangay Marbel, Matalam, said to be deputy brigade commander of the MILF’s 108th Base Command based in the same municipality.

Police said Embong was driving his red motorcycle on his way home when the suspect, also on board a motorbike, shot him on his head and chest, at crossing Ilian in Barangay Marbel.

The gunman, after seeing his target dead on the road, immediately sped towards the northeast portion of Matalam highway.

Embong was rushed to the nearest hospital but was already dead upon arrival, police reports said.

His immediate family and relatives told investigators they didn’t have any clue as to who could be behind the killing.

Authorities, however, are looking at personal grudge and land conflict as among the motives on the victim’s murder. (Malu Cadelina Manar / MindaNews)
