CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews / 13 February) – Army troops killed a suspected New People’s Army rebel in Barangay Besigan here on Wednesday.
Major Regie Go, public information officer of the 4th Infantry Division said the soldiers recovered the body of the alleged rebel after a 15-minute encounter with the armed group.
They recovered three firearms – two M16 and one M4 carbine rifles — from the encounter site, Go said.
“The terrorists withdrew leaving behind their dead comrade,” he said, adding the encounter site was located about 50 kilometers from downtown Cagayan de Oro.
He said Besigan residents informed authorities about the presence of around 10 NPA rebels who came down from the mountains to ask for food.
He said the information was relayed to a platoon of the 65th Infantry Battalion which was conducting security operations nearby.
Besigan is only three kilometers from Barangay Tignapoloan where the city government launched the Cagayan de Oro City Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict last Friday. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
