DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 28 July) – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake roused residents from sleep in several areas in Mindanao at 1:32 a.m. Tuesday, its epicenter located at 21 km northeast of Bayabas in Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs, in its Earthquake Bulletin No. 1, originally said it was a magnitude 6 quake with epicenter at 14 kms northeast of Bayabas, but later corrected it as magnitude 5.8 and adjusted the epicenter in its Earthquake Bulletin No. 2. It reportedly had a depth of focus of 40 kms.
The quake, of tectonic origin, was felt at Intensity IV in Bislig City, Cagwait, Hinatuan, and City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur; and in Butuan City.
It was at Intensity III in Surigao City; as well as in Gingoog City, and in the municipalities of Magsaysay and Medina in Misamis Oriental.
It was at Intensity II in Balingasag, Jasaan, Salay, Tagoloan, and Villanueva in Misamis and in Cagayan de Oro City; and Intensity I in Mambajao, Camiguin.
Phivolcs said it was not expecting damages but there will be aftershocks. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, there were already nine aftershocks recorded. (MindaNews)
