SIARGAO, Surigao del Norte (MindaNews / 01 August) — A surfing club here has signified interest in organic farming as an alternative source of livelihood.
Manuel Melindo, president of the Siargao Surfers’ Association (SISA), other officers and members held aa series of meetings with Hardin Ng Pagbabago.
“We are very much interested in this project as it will not only give us a lifeline but also ensure nutritious food on our tables,” Melindo said.
SISA has a total of 455 members all over the island, mostly serving as surfing instructors to tourists.
Surfers are among those adversely affected by the COVID-19 lockdowns since March.
The community-driven Hardin ng Pagbabago project provided SISA a basic organic farm seminar on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Harana Surf Resort.
Multi-awarded farmer Analyn Dulpina, who serves as farm technician of Hardin ng Pagbabago, said she was elated to share her knowledge with the surfers.
“We want to impart our knowledge to them so they’ll become productive and hope to produce nutritious food needed by surfing athletes themselves,” said Capt. Wise Panuelos, police chief of General Luna and Hardin Ng Pagbabago founder.
SISA got the nod from a generous landowner in Tawin Tawin, General Luna who offered 2,000 square meters of his land to be utilized for communal farming. (Roel N. Catoto / MindaNews)
