DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/02 June) – A Mindanao Economy and Environment Summit will be held next week in time for the June 5 celebration of World Environment Day whose theme this year is “Green Economy: Does it include you?”
This is the same theme adopted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for Environment Month and yes, Mindanao wants to be included, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), organizers of the two-day Summit at the Grand Regal Hotel on June 4 and 5, say.
“Building Constituency towards a Green Economy” is the Summit’s theme.
The Summit is part of the Mindanao Nurturing Our Waters (MindaNOW) program of MinDA that is aimed at “gathering stakeholders of Mindanao for creating champions, building constituency and adapting change in responding to the challenge of ensuring food on the table without compromising the carrying capacity of the environment by caring for our waters.”
Specifically, the Summit aims to: raise the level of awareness of Mindanawons on the importance of river basins of Mindanao; provide a venue for all Mindanawons to discuss and act as one in conserving biodiversity for a balanced ecosystem; and strengthen coordination and active participation of various stakeholders through a convergence effort with focus on river basin development, conservation, protection and management while taking into consideration climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) measures.
Among the Summit’s highlights are workshops and presentation of summit declarations, launching of the MindaNOW website and portal, launching of the Mindanao Environment Experts Forum including online registration into the portal, presentation of firmed-up projects under the MindaNOW Program and MindaNOW MOU (memorandum of understanding) signing.
